How to clean Mirrors

24th Nov 11

Make Your Mirror Shine

Mirrors are a reflection on how we maintain our house. Just like our homes, we want to keep our mirrors in pristine condition. Many people are happy just to wipe them once with a cloth and move on to other chores. There are, however, better techniques that will make your mirror gleam and shine. To do this you need a few things. You need a soft dusting cloth, glass cleaner, paper towels and old newspaper. Before you ask, the newspaper isn’t for reading.

How to clean:

If the mirror is hanging on a wall, make sure you take it down. This allows you to do an intensive clean without breaking it. Once taken down, place it on the old newspaper. This will catch all the dirt and keep your floor clean.

Now it’s time to clean!

·         Use your dusting cloth to dust the mirror frame, removing any build up of dust
·         Dampen a cleaning rag or hand towel with cleaning solution and rub away on the surface. It’s important not to apply the cleaning solution directly to the mirror.
·         Rub the surface with the old newspaper which will wipe away any splotches and ensure your mirror gives off that extra shine.

Following these simple instructions will keep your mirror gleaming. But it is important to consider a few things. For example, if you get cleaning solution on the frame you need to remove it quickly. This fluid can damage the frame’s material, so it’s best to be careful and protect it.

All of the materials used to clean a mirror can be purchased in a shop. If, however, you are feeling adventurous, why not try and make your own homemade items. For instance, cleaning solutions can easily be made from vinegar, rubbing alcohol, ammonia and water. It’s that simple!

Before cleaning, it is important to check the cleaning solution you plan on using will not affect the quality or look of the glass. The cleaning method above is primarily for plain mirrors and windows.

If you follow these instructions, your mirror will provide a pure reflection of your wonderful home.

Bathroom Mirrors

Bathroom mirrors can be troublesome to keep clean. You only have to step out of the shower to see that mirrors cloud up easily and leave marks on the surface. Well, there is a way to avoid this. Before you have a shower you can rub in a bit of liquid soap or shaving cream to your mirror. These materials will create a thin layer over the surface which will prevent it fogging up. Now you can jump out the shower and shave or apply make-up without any difficulties.

(Note: It is important to regularly clean off the liquid soap or shaving cream from the mirror by using a cleaning solution)
